Environmental Leader reports on findings from the fourth and final phase of SustainAbility’s Rate the Raters research program.

In the future, corporate sustainability ratings need to be financially viable, forward-looking and transparent, according to the fourth and final phase of a research program into such ratings, published by SustainAbility.
In the final phase of Rate the Raters, SustainAbility argues that today many ratings are not financially viable and thus cannot invest adequate resources to improve and evolve.
Ratings also need to be predictive and forward looking. It is more important to know how a company is positioned to compete in the future rather than how it fared in the past, the white paper argues.
And transparency is also key for successful future rating systems, according to the white paper. Those ratings that reveal methodologies and results will build trust and stimulate further demand, Rate the Raters says.

The Lancet recently published a major international study revealing that 347 million adults worldwide suffered from diabetes in 2008 – a number that has doubled since 1980 and exceeds that shown in previous studies. As it was a scientific study, it doesn’t address the staggering economic implications of this number in terms of lost productivity and exorbitant healthcare costs for treatment and support. However, a study also published in June in Value in Health contends that nearly one in five people with diabetes are regularly unable to attend a full day at work due to disruption caused by episodes of dangerously low blood sugar. And one in every ten healthcare dollars in the US is spent on diabetes and its complications.

In the fourth part of its ‘Rate the Raters’ project, SustainAbility has published 35 questions that it would like ratings companies to publicly answer by 1 January next year.
“We do believe that raters need to be more transparent about their practices,” the company says in its Necessary Future of Ratings report.
